Dental Implants Maintenance

While dental implants are designed to last decades, their success depends entirely on proper care and maintenance. Read on for practical, actionable tips on daily home care and regular professional monitoring.

Follow Your Aftercare Instructions

Following your dental implant procedure, you’ll receive detailed post-operative instructions designed to promote optimal healing and recovery. Adhering to these care guidelines for the recommended duration is essential for preventing complications and ensuring your implants integrate successfully with your jawbone.

Routine Dental Visits

Every 6 months after your implants are placed, you will need to return to our office for a hygiene recall & maintenance appointment. At this appointment, your restorative doctor will make sure your implants are healthy and evaluate your bite and overall hygiene. X-rays will be taken as needed. The teeth will not be removed at this appointment unless necessary.

Proper Brushing & Flossing

Use a soft-bristle toothbrush or an electric toothbrush to clean your implants and surrounding gums thoroughly. Electric toothbrushes are particularly effective for plaque removal and gentle enough to avoid gum irritation. Dental implants require meticulous flossing to remove debris and plaque. Use implant-specific floss or water flossers to clean the spaces between implants and along the gum line.

Use Your Judgment

Dental implants restore your ability to enjoy most foods and beverages with confidence, requiring minimal lifestyle changes. That said, a little judiciousness goes a long way. Avoid extremely hard foods such as ice and hard candies, and limit sticky foods like taffy and chewing gum that could potentially affect your implant restoration.

Avoid Smoking

Smoking can affect dental implant success by slowing your body’s natural healing processes and reducing blood flow to the surgical site. For the best long-term outcomes and to protect your investment, maintaining a tobacco-free lifestyle is crucial for implant longevity and overall oral health.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • With proper care, dental implants can last 25+ years—and some patients report having the same implants for over 30 years. Studies show implant success rates between 95% and 99%, especially when performed by skilled specialists using premium materials.

  • Your teeth will look incredibly natural as they have been personalized to complement your facial features and jaw movements. We offer various shades and styles, ensuring we design and craft the smile you have always dreamed of having.

  • Our permanent teeth are crafted from high-quality zirconia, a strong and biocompatible ceramic known for its durability, natural appearance, and resistance to stains. Zirconia is ideal for long-lasting full-arch dental implant restorations. We also have other options of materials as well.

  • The typical follow-up schedule is one weeks and four weeks. The one-week visit is approximately when the stitches have dissolved, and the bruising/swelling has dissipated. We will show you how to care for your teeth and make any minor adjustments as needed. This will occur a second time at the four-week visit.

  • After dental implants, you can eventually eat almost anything you want, but there are two distinct phases to consider:

    With Temporary Healing Teeth
It’s best to follow a soft food diet to protect the healing implant site. During the first 24-48 hours, you should stick to cool liquids, and it’s recommended that you stick to a diet of soft foods with your temporary healing teeth.

    After Full Healing:
Once healed, dental implants do not carry any dietary restrictions and you can enjoy all of your favorite foods.

While you can eat almost everything, it’s still wise to avoid extremely hard items like ice, hard candies, and very sticky foods like taffy to protect your restoration from potential damage – just as you would with your natural teeth.
