    Pain & Swelling

It’s common to experience swelling, bruising, numbness and pain in the first week post-surgery. The level of pain should continue to diminish with each day. Keep your head elevated for the first 2-3 nights to minimize swelling. Apply ice for the first 24 hours, then switch to warm compresses after 48 hours to reduce bruising. Swelling typically peaks around day 3 and gradually subsides.

    Smoking, Vaping & Alcohol

We recommend avoiding both smoking and alcohol for at least 1 week after surgery or until cleared by your doctor. We also recommend avoiding smoking and nicotine products for the duration of your treatment as nicotine products negatively impact healing and success of treatment.

    Medications

Patients will typically receive antibiotics as well as prescription mouth rinse. For pain, management, we suggest alternating OTC medications, or use taking narcotics if needed. Take all medications with food to prevent nausea, and avoid driving while using narcotic pain medications.

    Rest & Exercise

Keep your head elevated for the first 2-3 nights post-surgery to minimize swelling. Avoid any strenuous physical activity and heavy lifting for 1 week after surgery or until cleared by your doctor. Exercise can increase your blood pressure and cause bleeding and pain.

    Cleaning & Hygiene

We recommend rinsing your mouth with warm salt water daily for the first 10-14 days. This can especially be helpful after meals. We also advise brushing gently with a toothbrush dipped in mouthwash or water.

    Diet & Nutrition

Staying well-hydrated and eating nutritious foods promotes faster healing after surgery. Follow a soft diet consisting of foods you can easily cut with a fork, while avoiding hot beverages, spicy or acidic foods, and anything requiring tearing or biting with your front teeth. Regular, nutritious meals will help you feel better and recover more quickly. See our 50 soft foods guide for more ideas!

    Recovery Timeline

Everyone heals at a different pace, and you know your body best. We expect you to be able to return to work within 3 days to 1 week of surgery. The amount of time you take off work depends on how you feel and recover. Consider what type of work you do and your general state of health when requesting time off from work in preparation for surgery. While taking narcotics, you will not be able to drive or operate heavy machinery.
